Matt Nichols

Matt Nichols is a solo bassist and performer based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Performing under the name One Man Bass Band, he approaches the bass less like a traditional rhythm instrument and more like a full musical canvas, building layered arrangements in real time using fingerstyle, tapping, effects, and live looping.

What started as experimenting with sound turned into a signature style. By blending groove, harmony, and texture, Matt creates full-bodied instrumental performances from a single bass guitar. The result is something that feels both intimate and expansive, music that can fill a room without overpowering it.

His live sets move naturally between hip hop, rock, video game themes, original compositions, and laid-back instrumental grooves. In one setting, it becomes the perfect backdrop for conversation at a brewery or market. In another, it takes center stage and draws a crowd in.

Part of what makes One Man Bass Band unique is the simplicity of the setup. It’s self-contained, adaptable, and built for a wide range of environments, from coffee shops and private dinners to larger event spaces. No backing tracks. No band. Just one bass, a loop station, and a deep understanding of the instrument.

At the core of it all is curiosity, constantly exploring how far the bass can go, how much it can say, and how many roles it can play.

Matt’s experience performing in different bands and musical projects helped shape the way he understands the bass today. Playing in groove-driven funk groups, rock bands, and experimental projects pushed him to explore rhythm, harmony, and musical texture far beyond traditional bass playing.

Those same ideas now carry over into his teaching, where students learn not just what to play, but how the bass works inside the music.
